Minimalist Traveler

Hi everyone! I’m sorry it has taken me so long to write another post.  It took me a while to get into a writing groove again in the new year with so much going on!  I decided to just dive in with a thought on traveling light.

My husband and I took a ten day trip and wanted to pack as lightly as possible.  We knew we would have access to laundry, and didn’t have enough time to see most friends and family more than once.  So, we packed for 5 days only.  In addition, I made sure to pack outfits that could mix and match and allow me to take even less.

My suitcase included the following:
2 pairs of jeans (I wore one pair on the plane)
2 sweaters
1 blouse
2 T shirts
1 camisole
1 sweater dress
1 pair of leggings
1 cardigan
1 Sweatshirt (wore on the plane)
Undergarments/Socks for 5 days
2 necklaces
2 pairs of earrings
1 pair of sneakers (wore on the plane)
1 pair boots
Travel sized toiletries
Only essentials for make up (example: no need for 5 different colored eye shadows, 1 was enough)

The only carry-on I brought was my purse with a good book.  My first trans-Atlantic flight without a carry-on suitcase!

I found that traveling light with only the essentials made the whole trip simpler and more enjoyable.  I did not have to over think what I was going to wear each day, and the limited options actually felt really good!

Do you have any tips or tricks on how you travel light?  Please share your thoughts!

  1. ...And you looked beautiful! Great job.

I like it that you only brought a purse as a carryon, but my concern is always FOOD. You didn't bring any snacks, for just in case??

  2. Hurray for packing light, Dana! After so many years of trips and moves, I'm finally learning how to pack lightly. Even when I won't have access to a washing machine where I'm heading, as long as there's a bathroom sink and a place to hang-dry some clothes overnight, I know I'll be fine.

I, too, pack as many mix-and-match outfits/layers as I can. But I usually find that when my trip is over, there's at least one top or skirt in my suitcase that I haven't even worn. Did you wear everything you packed for this trip, or would you pack even less next time?

    1. Hi eagerurbanist! Please excuse the late reply! I actually did find that I wore everything I brought this time, I think it's the first time ever that this has happened. I'm writing up a new post right now about my packing for a 5 day trip to London, we are trying to only each bring a small back pack, stay tuned and wish me luck!
